For so many breast cancer survivors, breast reconstruction is an important part of their rehabilitation and feeling like their vibrant, womanly selves once again. Yet, as one recent study shows, many women are left in the dark when it comes to knowing their reconstruction options. Without the facts, and an honest, open discussion, it is much more difficult for a woman to feel confident about the decision she ultimately makes—whether or not that means reconstruction.
Published this past March, a small study asked 126 women facing mastectomy a number of questions to assess their general knowledge about breast reconstruction. While over 90 percent of the women reported that they had some discussion with a provider about reconstruction, the study found that only 43 percent of the women surveyed had adequate knowledge to make a well-informed decision. Other interesting take a-ways include:
- At 14.3%, few of the women surveyed understood the risks and complications of breast reconstruction
- Just over half of the women had discussed with their providers the reasons to have breast reconstruction
- Three quarters of women correctly identified that breast reconstruction has no influence on the odds of breast cancer returning
- Six in ten of the women knew that reconstruction does not affect future cancer screenings
The study’s lead author, Dr. Clara Nan-hi Lee says, “If patients don’t fully understand their options, they may make a choice that is not truly what they will be happy with.” Dr. Dolye of The Centre for Aesthetic + Reconstructive Surgery couldn’t agree more! Dr. Doyle is dedicated to promoting awareness of the many reconstruction options available to her patients post mastectomy. Awareness is key and understanding the advantages and disadvantages of breast reconstruction is a woman’s best guide when it comes to making a well-informed decision.
