Saline Breast Implants vs. Silicone: Which is Best for Me?

Saline Breast Implants vs. Silicone Breast Implants

The type of breast implant you choose will have a decisive impact on the look and feel of your breast augmentation procedure. Because each woman is unique and each desire slightly different, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Andrea Doyle has opted to offer both silicone and saline options, enabling her to meet the varied needs and goals of each patient she sees.

If you have been considering breast augmentation in or around the East Greenwich area, please call Dr. Doyle at 401-336-3770 to schedule your consultation and learn which implant option is right for you.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants can be filled after they have been placed. This serves the dual benefit of allowing for a smaller incision and enabling last-minute adjustments to implant size. These are the only type of implants available to women under the age of 22.

Saline breast implants, when placed above the muscles of the chest, may feel less natural than their silicone alternatives. They may also be more likely to ripple, wrinkle, fold, bubble, or otherwise become aesthetically imperfect. They are also prone to deflation when ruptured. Newer, structured saline breast implants help to reduce the risk of many of these issues.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants look and feel more like natural breast tissue. Particularly the newer form-stable (‘gummy bear”) option, which has shown to hold both shape and size even after rupture. Silicone implants are more viscous and less likely to ripple, wrinkle, and suffer similar imperfections. This viscosity adds to their natural feel, making them ideal for above-the-muscle placement.

Silicone implants are pre-filled and may require a larger incision. They are not available to women under the age of 22.

Which Option is Best?

There is no “best” breast implant, just the best one for you. We can help you determine which option will meet your needs during your initial consultation.

There are several breast implant options that can be customized to meet your specific goals. In the short video below, board-certified Rhode Island plastic surgeon Dr. Andrea Doyle discusses some of these options.

Breast augmentation uses fat transfer or breast implants to improve the size, shape, and symmetry of the breasts. Various factors can influence the cost of breast augmentation, making it best to meet with a board-certified plastic surgeon to establish the full cost.

In this short video, Dr. Andrea Doyle discusses what factors into the cost of breast augmentation in Rhode Island. If you have questions, would like to discuss financing, or are ready to make your first appointment, please call 401-336-3770 and schedule your consultation today.

What are the top three reasons women seek breast enlargement?

  1. To restore volume after pregnancy or weight loss,
  2. for breast reconstruction, and
  3. to treat congenital issues such as asymmetry

In the short video below, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Andrea Doyle explains these three things in a bit more detail.

You will be making a lot of decisions as you plan for your upcoming breast augmentation. The implant, of course, is an important consideration. Often, the focus lies in the material, size, or shape of the implant—commonly overlooked is who and where their implant is manufactured.

There are three major implant manufacturers, Mentor®, Allergan Natrelle®, and Sientra—each with subtle differences that ultimately make one implant manufacture the preferred choice over the other. What is Dr. Doyle’s implant of choice? She prefers Mentor breast implants and features them exclusively at her East Greenwich practice.

Anyone considering a breast augmentation or breast lift (mastopexy) with implants to improve their breast shape/size is routinely confronted with “plastic surgery gone wrong” horror stories.  These myths almost always make the decision to proceed with a breast modifying procedure more complex.  So what are the most common myths, and what do you really need to know?

1.) You need breast implants for a lift – FALSE. Only a breast lift, or mastopexy, can correct redundant skin and sagginess of the breast.

2.) You cannot breast feed after a breast augmentation – FALSE.  Breast augmentation is typically performed with an incision through the inframammary fold, arm pit, or belly button and should not result in a problem with breast feeding.

3.) Natural breast augmentation with fat is better than breast implants – FALSE.  Transferring a patient’s own fat to the breast after liposuction is a new procedure in the US, currently without regulatory approval, and thus no standardized practice amongst surgeons. The long-term safety considerations have yet to be fully studied, making this a unique and controversial procedure. Additionally, not all of the fat will survive the transfer, making future problems with symmetry and a pleasing aesthetic appearance difficult to forecast.

4.) Under the muscle is more natural looking than over the muscle – DEPENDS.  In breast augmentation, the decision to place the implant under the pectoralis major muscle or subglandularly over the muscle is entirely dependent upon a patient’s individual anatomy.  Differently, patients will achieve different results depending on their own anatomy.  This decision should be made between the patient and the surgeon during the consultation.

5.) Saline is safer than silicone – FALSE.  Saline implants gained popularity because silicone implants were thought to cause medical problems.  After nearly twenty years of clinical study, this has not been proven true.  In fact, silicone breast implants have been proven to perform equally over their lifespan as saline breast implants.  Silicone implants are generally regarded to provide a more natural feeling than saline implants; however, saline implants require less surveillance and do not require MRIs.
