What Are My Breast Implant Options?

For women with asymmetrical breast tissue, the placement of implants can also be used to create ideal symmetry, improving clothing options and, often, enhancing self-esteem.

Several procedural steps and surgical options allow breast augmentation to be customized for the individual patient. Many of these involve the implants themselves. At The Centre for Aesthetic + Reconstructive Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeon offers a range of choices that help to ensure the most natural-looking, long-lasting breast augmentation results.

Breast Implant Options

There are two types of breast implants: saline and silicone. Both types of breast implants can produce remarkable results, but neither is ideal for every need.

Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution after they have been placed, allowing for size adjustments even after they have been inserted. This both allows for a smaller incision and helps ensure optimal customization. However, saline implants are more prone to aesthetic imperfections over time and may feel less natural when placed above the muscles in the chest.

Silicone breast implants, particularly “gummy bear” and MemoryShape® options, look and feel like natural breast tissue, allowing them to produce realistic outcomes even when placed above chest muscles. They are also less likely to ripple, wrinkle, or crease as time passes. However, silicone implants require a slightly larger incision and typically cost more than saline alternatives.

Both saline and silicone breast implants come in rounded and teardrop shapes. Round implants tend to produce a fuller look in both the upper and lower portion of the breasts and, when placed above chest muscles, may create a more “augmented” look. Teardrop implants produce lower breast fullness but taper off towards the upper portion, producing a look that more closely mimics the natural shape of the breasts. However, the dimensions of the chest, ribcage, and surrounding features also play a role in these outcomes.
