How Do PRP Treatments with Selphyl® PRFM Work?
Platelets and other blood components migrate to an injury site, releasing growth factors that repair and respond to the injury. That promotes healing, and by processing the blood and concentrating the platelet-rich plasma, we can increase your body’s ability to heal itself.
The process starts by drawing a blood sample. Your blood then goes through the Selphyl® controlled isolation process which includes a unique operating technique to protect and preserve the platelets. That method eliminates contamination from red and white blood cells. Platelet concentration is achieved when there’s double the amount of platelet-rich plasma in the blood sample, and the resulting color is golden, similar to straw.
Some patients may be happy with their PRP results for hair growth or other cosmetic concerns after just one treatment, though we generally recommend additional sessions to achieve the best outcome. The complete treatment with Selphyl® takes approximately 30 minutes.
The problem with previous PRP isolation systems was user-error and contamination, such as a resulting substance that is pink or red-tinted instead of golden colored, which could cause an inflammatory response to the treatment. Selphyl® PRFM was designed to provide safe, rapid PRFM preparation from a smaller blood sample.

Are There Side Effects or Allergy Concerns with PRP Treatments & Selphyl® PRFM?
The Selphyl® PRFM System collects a small sample of your blood and rapidly isolates the PRFM to reintroduce it into the treated area to promote healing and hair growth. Because it’s not a foreign substance or synthetic product, there’s minimal risk of an allergic reaction. Side effects are as with an injection and include tenderness, swelling, discoloration, mild (temporary) irritation, itching, and tenderness at the injection site. You may experience slight discomfort during the injection process such as redness or bruising, both of which go away shortly after your treatment.
