Gynecomastia is a medical condition marked by excess glandular tissue or fat deposits in the chest. Creating the appearance of female breasts, the condition can limit clothing options, detract from your physical efforts, and result in embarrassment – and oftentimes personal effort to address the problem will fail to produce results.

Gynecomastia is common in adolescence as hormone fluctuations peak. In these cases, the condition will typically self-correct. Some effort, such as eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise, may be needed to ensure a complete reduction in these cases. Those same efforts may not help at all, however, when the condition occurs in adulthood.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia may be a result of weight gain, hormone fluctuations, or genetics. The condition may also be related to drug and alcohol use, certain medications, anabolic steroids, and the simple process of aging. Understanding its cause may help to ensure the correct treatment.

Treating gynecomastia may involve lifestyle changes, such as becoming more active, along with healthy dietary choices. Neither of these need be extreme. If you struggle with finding foods or activities you enjoy, consider working with a nutritionist and/or personal trainer who can assist. June is Men’s Health Month and a great time to take steps like these that can help improve your physical and emotional health.

Male Breast Reduction

Male breast reduction becomes necessary when personal efforts, such as lifestyle changes, have failed to produce desirable results. With this procedure, excess fat and glandular tissue is removed from the chest, helping to define the pectoral muscles and restore a masculine appearance to the upper body.

Commonly performed on its own, male breast reduction may be complementary to additional body contouring options, such as liposuction of the flanks, arm lift, and abdominoplasty.
