Breastfeeding After Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation uses implants to improve the bust’s size, symmetry, projection, and shape. To place implants, incisions can be made around the nipple (periareolar), underneath the breast (inframammary), in the armpit (Transaxillary), or in the belly button (TUBA). Dr. Doyle prefers the periareolar and inframammary techniques for optimal access to the surgical site.

There are three options for the placement of breast implants:

  • Subglandular. Under the breast mound but over the chest muscles
  • Submuscular. Under both chest muscles and breast mound
  • Dual Plane. Partially over and partially under the chest muscles

It is entirely possible to breastfeed after breast augmentation. Breast implants pose no health risks to breastfeeding babies and, with appropriate surgical options, potential complications with milk supply can often be avoided.

Incisions + Placement

The inframammary incision may be best for women who plan on breastfeeding in the future. This incision eliminates the risk of diminished nipple sensitivity, an uncommon but possible consequence of breast augmentation. While typically temporary, diminished sensitivity can make breastfeeding more difficult.

Having breast implants placed below the chest muscles is another way to protect your breastfeeding ability. Submuscular placement helps to prevent compression of milk ducts, enabling the breasts to produce and release milk without interference. Placing breast implants below the chest muscles also helps eliminate aesthetic risks such as rippling, double bubble, and bottoming out.

Choosing the Best Option for Your Needs

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as an eyelid lift or an eye lift, helps to improve the appearance of the skin around the eyes. Benefits offered by this procedure include:

  • Improved Vision. Lifting upper lids helps to improve vision that has been obscured by drooping skin
  • Improved Appearance. Lifted lids expose more of the eye, helping to produce a look that is more alert, awake, and attentive
  • Reduced Signs of Exhaustion. Dark circles and puffy skin can be removed from underneath the eyes to restore a rested and relaxed appearance
  • Reduced Signs of Aging. Removing wrinkles from upper and lower lids helps to create a more youthful and attractive look

Of course, there are individual benefits offered by this procedure that may not apply to everyone. The best way to learn what an eyelid lift can do for you is through a private consultation with Dr. Doyle.

Facial Rejuvenation

Blepharoplasty can improve the appearance of the eyelids, but it cannot address issues such as crow’s feet and hollowness underneath the eyes. For these, non-surgical options can be used to help enhance your final results.

Injectables such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® are ideal for addressing wrinkles next to the eyes (crow’s feet). These can also remove creases in between the eyebrows and give a gentle lift to the brows themselves, all of which are complementary to eyelid surgery.

Dermal fillers, including those made by Juvéderm®, Restylane®, and Sculptra®, can be used to correct sunken skin and hollowness underneath the eyes. These can also be used to add volume to the cheeks, the temples, and the jaw, helping to eliminate wrinkles and improve the appearance of the entire face.

Skin laxity, pigmentation irregularities, fine lines, deep wrinkles, and more can be addressed through non-surgical services. We offer several med spa options that can be used to enhance eyelid surgery. During your initial consultation, Dr. Doyle will carefully evaluate your areas of concern and provide information on all of the services that may help you in reaching your goals.

The tummy tuck procedure removes excess skin from the abdominal area and can restore weakened abdominal muscles. Many tummy tuck candidates seek out the procedure because of the physical changes caused by pregnancy, weight loss or the natural aging process. The sagging skin that results often does not shrink back, so a tummy tuck is a great way to remove it once and for all.

Aging Rhode Island woman shows botox before and after BOTOX® is a unique injectable that offers a wide variety of benefits ranging from cosmetic treatments for forehead lines to medical uses for crossed eyes and excessive sweating. Dr. Doyle can help you determine what BOTOX® can do for you during your consultation.

BOTOX® Cosmetic FDA-Approved Uses for Lines and Wrinkles

This injectable product is a neuromodulator that contains OnabotulinumtoxinA—a neurotoxin that paralyzes muscle movements to reduce wrinkles and stop spasms. The first use for BOTOX® was to treat crossed eyes in the 1970s, which is when researchers first noticed its anti-aging benefits for glabellar lines. BOTOX® and similar injectables are now widely used for non-surgical facial rejuvenation.

Vertical Frown Lines, FDA-Approved 2002

Vertical lines found between the eyebrows are called glabellar lines. These deep wrinkles are exaggerated when you make facial expressions, particularly when you frown. BOTOX® Cosmetic treats moderate to severe frown lines by limiting movements of the muscles in that area to relax the skin.

Crow’s Feet Lines, FDA-Approved 2013

These wrinkles appear on the outer corner of your eye and branch out, similar in look to a crow’s footprint. Crow’s feet can be caused by excessive sun or UV exposure and the natural loss of collagen and skin elasticity due to age. BOTOX® Cosmetic works to treat moderate to severe crow’s feet by relaxing the muscles around the corners of your eyes to smoothen the skin and can last several months.

Forehead Lines, FDA-Approved 2017

Those horizontal lines on your forehead can be frustrating and are nearly impossible to minimize through topical treatments. Your skin changes as you age, producing less collagen and elastin, which are responsible for youthful, taut skin. These wrinkles worsen as you age, but sun exposure, lifestyle habits, and genetics also play a role in the severity of forehead lines. BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe horizontal forehead lines. It works to address these lines by inhibiting activity of the frontalis muscle that is responsible for lifting your eyebrows and causes lines to form.

BOTOX® is also FDA-approved to treat these medical conditions and concerns:

  • Strabismus (crossed eyes)
  • Blepharospasm (eyelid twitching)
  • Cervical Dystonia
  • Chronic Migraine
  • Arm and Leg Muscle Stiffness
  • Urinary Incontinence
  • Excessive Underarm Sweating
  • Overactive Bladder
