Are There Medical Benefits to Abdominoplasty?

Young caucasian woman with slim body shape is indoors at daytime.Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as tummy tuck surgery, is a cosmetic procedure. It is designed to remove excess skin from the midsection of the body.

Often combined with liposuction, abdominoplasty can help to improve contours and highlight the natural definition of your hips, waist, and belly. In the process, it can eliminate stretch marks, improving the appearance of the skin as well.

Tummy tuck surgery can enhance clothing options and may improve range of motion. For some, this increases both the desire and the ability to engage in more challenging and demanding exercises and activities.

When abdominoplasty is used as a springboard for healthier living and enhanced physical activity, it can certainly come with health benefits. However, these are reliant on individual patient desires and effort. They are not an automatic result of the procedure itself.

Abdominoplasty and Diastasis Recti

Separated abdominal muscles are common following multiple pregnancies or excessive weight fluctuations. When left untreated, this can result in complications, including:

  • Umbilical Hernia
  • Chronic Lower back Pain
  • Bowl and Bladder Issues
  • Painful Intercourse

During a full abdominoplasty, separated rectus abdominis (“six-pack”) muscles are reattached and tightened. Treating diastasis recti in this manner significantly reduces the risk of its complications.

While tummy tuck surgery is not designed to treat health conditions or diseases, it is one of the surest and most effective options for firming separated abdominal muscles.

Fully Vs Mini Tummy Tuck

Tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) addresses excess skin around the belly. The two most popular techniques, full abdominoplasty and mini-abdominoplasty, can both accomplish this, but to slightly different degrees.

During a full tummy tuck, excess skin is removed from both the upper and lower portions of the belly. During a mini tummy tuck, excess skin is removed from the lower abdomen alone.

When necessary, abdominal muscles can be pulled back together during full tummy tuck surgery, helping to restore desirable dimensions to the waist. By contrast, a mini tummy tuck does not address separated abdominal muscles.

With both techniques, stubborn fat deposits can be removed using liposuction, helping to produce a firmer, more toned, and more attractive shape to the midsection. Both procedures may also be useful in the reduction or elimination of stretch marks depending on their location and size.

Which Option is Best for Me?

Mini tummy tuck surgery is ideal for people with excess fat and skin obscuring the lower portion of the abdomen. Full tummy tuck surgery is better for people with excess skin and fat throughout the belly, as well as those who have been diagnosed with diastasis recti, the separation of abdominal muscles.

As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Andrea Doyle has the experience and qualifications necessary to guide you towards the best option for your needs. During your initial consultation, she will listen closely to your desires, fully assess your abdominal area, and make recommendations based on your anatomy, with the express intention of helping you reach your goals.

Is Abdominoplasty for Weight Loss?

Fat can be removed from the belly during both full and mini tummy tuck, but neither technique is an effective method of weight loss. If you are significantly overweight, it is best to come closer to your goal BMI through diet and exercise before undergoing an abdominoplasty procedure. If you have lost substantial amounts of weight and are now experiencing loose and sagging skin throughout the body, tummy tuck can be combined with other body lift procedures – such as thigh and arm lift – to restore an ideally contoured look to the entire frame.

June is Fresh Fruits and Veggies Month – and a good time to take a look at your current diet to see where it might be improved for a healthier and more attractive physique. Diets high in whole foods, particularly fresh fruits and vegetables, offer several benefits, including weight management, heart health, and decreased risks for diseases and disorders that can impact every part of your body. They also help ready the body for both surgical and non-surgical body contouring procedures.

Being close to a healthy BMI is important for many body contouring treatments. If you are considering a procedure but need to shed a few extra pounds first, taking up a healthy diet in combination with a rigorous exercise regimen is among the most effective ways to reach your goals. Maintaining these healthy lifestyle choices after body contouring is also important to help ensure your results continue to impress for years to come.

Body Contouring at the Centre for Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Andrea Doyle offers a range of body contouring procedures that can be used to address stubborn fat deposits and loose skin on nearly any area of the body. Among our most popular options are:

  • Male Breast Reduction. This procedure removes unwanted fat and glandular tissue from the chest to restore a masculine appearance

In addition to these procedures, we offer non-surgical body contouring options such as Kybella® for the elimination of excess fat underneath the chin and Ultherapy® to gently lift and tighten skin following weight loss. During your initial consultation, Dr. Doyle will listen carefully to your concerns, assess your problem areas, and help you choose the best options for your needs.

Liposuction and tummy tuck are both body contouring procedures, but they accomplish different cosmetic goals. Liposuction removes stubborn fat in patients who are within 30 percent of their goal weight, while tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat in the abdomen and tightens stretched abdominal muscles. Cosmetic surgery: When is the right time?

When considering a cosmetic procedure, whether it is Botox injections or a breast augmentation, you may ask yourself, “Is this the best time to have it done?”  Deciding to have plastic surgery is a personal decision, of course, and timing depends at lot upon your goals and desired outcome.  Below are a few guidelines to keep in mind.

Plan Ahead

If you want to be ready for a special occasion, definitely plan ahead.  Many non-surgical procedures such as Botox®, Dysport®, and dermal fillers (Juvederm®, Restylane®, Perlane®, Sculptra®) have immediate results and require little to no downtime.  You may want to look your best for a wedding, family party, or class reunion, but you should give yourself about 2 weeks for any minimal bruising to resolve.

Most surgical procedures, such as a tummy tuck, liposuction, and breast augmentation, do require several weeks to fully recover.  So if you want to look your best in your bathing suit or for that special event, you should plan to give yourself time for the swelling to resolve and for your incisions to heal.

General Guidelines for Popular Procedures

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty):  Maybe your abdomen protrudes after having children, or you have excess skin or bulging at your waistline you can pinch.  You exercise and watch your diet, but your shape is just not what you want it to be.   A tummy tuck may be helpful by removing excessive skin and fat, repairing the abdominal muscles separated by pregnancy, and even improving a C-section scar.  In most circumstances it is best to wait until after you lose excess weight and have finished having children.  Give yourself about 12 weeks to heal before your bathing suit debut or your special event.

Breast Augmentation:  Generally speaking, there are two time periods when a woman seeks breast enhancement surgery.  A young woman in her twenties may recognize that she has finished developing breast tissue and she desires larger breasts.  A breast augmentation with saline or silicone gel implants would provide the best option to help her achieve fuller breasts.  An older woman, later in her thirties, forties, or fifties, may have lost volume after having children, or may notice sagging of her breasts.  A breast lift, or mastopexy, can remove excess sagging skin and can reposition the nipple on the breast.  Depending on your needs, Dr. Doyle will recommend one procedure or a combination of a breast augmentation and breast lift to help you achieve your goals for breast enhancement.  Recovery from breast augmentation is usually quick, but do give yourself a few months before a major event to look your best.

Liposuction:  Liposuction can be used to treat stubborn fat pockets in many parts of the body including the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, neck, back, and chest.  Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity and is not an effective treatment for cellulite, the dimpled skin that sometimes appears on the thighs, hips, and buttocks.  Removing excess fat deposits improves your body contour and proportion, and ultimately can enhance your self-image.  Winter is a great time to do liposuction since post-operative support garments can be easily hidden under clothing.

-Facial Rejuvenation:  Improve your appearance anytime with a Hydrafacial, revitalizing peel, or anti-aging facial offered by our aesthetician.  All skin care procedures offer the most advanced medical grade products and are supervised by Dr. Doyle.  Get your skin glowing right before your special event.  More advanced facial rejuvenation, such as an eyelid lift, facelift, and neck lift can take between two to six months for the swelling to be completely gone.
